Description
Short leaved aloe, also known as crocodile plant this South African native features fleshy blue-gray leaves that are densely clustered around the rosette. The prominent white ‘teeth’ around the margins and spine of each leaf closely resemble the jaws of its namesake, and give this plant a distinctive look. With a clumping growth habit spanning up to 12 inches tall and wide, this plant is at home in both a container planting or an outdoor rock garden, in temperate regions.
Like many Aloe, this variety prefers bright sun, but can tolerate partially shaded conditions. Indeed, in direct sun the leaves will flush shades of bright red and yellow, and the plant is more likely to send up stalks of orange flowers in the late springtime. Since the thick leaves store a significant amount of water for the plant, plan to water infrequently – only once the soil has had a chance to completely dry out from the last watering. A porous soil mixture will also help to ward off issues with dampness or overwatering, as will a well-draining pot and adequate airflow around the leaves of the plant.
